Kamloops Indian Residential School survivors, along with other residential school Survivors, have come forward from across the country expressing interest in sharing their experiences and truths relating to missing children, deaths, and unmarked graves. In response to this, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC), the Indian Residential School Survivor Society (IRSSS), and the UBC Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre have come together to form a partnership with Tk’eml’ups te Secwepemc to facilitate a process of survivor testimony gathering.

ACCESSING SUPPORTS

The Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS) services include trauma counselling, grief and loss counselling, crisis counselling, family and group counselling and other supports including Traditional Healing Methods & Medicines. Former students of Indian Residential Schools and their family members are eligible for supports through the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program. The supports are available regardless of Indigenous status or place of residence, and include access to trauma-informed emotional supports, cultural supports, and mental health counselling.

The toll-free Hope for Wellness Help Line offers 24/7 support to all Indigenous people. Trained counsellors are available by phone at 1-855-242-3310 or online chat at hopeforwellness.ca. This service is available in English and French, and upon request in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.
