Building relationships with Shannon Robinson
Posted on March 22, 2021

Shannon Robinson is the Education and Programming Strategist at the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre. She hails from Red Deer Albert and has degree in First Nations & Indigenous studies from UBC. Her work as a program coordinator for the Native Youth Program and intern at the Museum of Anthropology in Education and Public Programs make her an important addition to the Centre’s staff. Throughout these roles, Shannon explains that she has always aimed to use her voice and positionality to uplift and respect voices from Indigenous communities.

Shannon’s vision of education is to create a series of programming for students at all grade levels, which will leave room for spontaneity and growth. She is also working towards establishing a model for Educational and Public Programming at the Centre that will allow Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to come together.

“I take a non-hierarchical approach to my work that is based on care, respect and the teachings of reciprocity. It is a constant goal for me to be searching for pathways towards networks of understanding between different peoples.” says Shannon.

She looks forward to working on new projects at the Centre, such as creating various temporary and permanent exhibitions. She strives to create a place for story and community in these exhibitions, which she believes are important qualities when maintaining authenticity in a learning space. Ultimately, she hopes that with more ways of learning and thinking will come new values and connections.
