On January 1, 2020, new federal legislation comes into effect for all provinces and territories in Canada. According to the Preamble the Act, also called Bill C-92, is intended to create a “comprehensive reform of child and family services that are provided in relation to Indigenous children.”
Centre Director and Professor of law Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Aki-kwe, has written a primer on the new Indigenous child welfare legislation. It has been prepared as a practice overview for those working with First Nations children, youth, families, communities and First Nations governments.
